It turns out that there lots of ferries leaving the Skull Pirate ThirdGrade Teacher shirt and by the same token and island of Manhattan every day, commuter ferries to Brooklyn and the New Jersey towns of Hoboken and Weehawken; the famed Staten Island Ferry; the excursion boats taking day-trippers across to Governor’s Island. But as I looked over schedules and maps, I realized the perfect ferry was the one going to Rockaway, a barrier island on the southern edge of Queens, and the now-gentrified community that one of my grandmothers had fled decades earlier. The ferry takes a leisurely route through the New York harbor and then out to sea, weaving its way past moored freighters, skirting the waterfront neighborhoods of Brooklyn, passing under the famed Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge before landing at Rockaway Beach and turning around for a return trip, roughly an hour each way. Perfect.

On that first day, I showed up at Pier 11, just off Wall Street, around 10 a.m. on a Wednesday, bought my ticket ($2.75 one way) and waited on line behind eight other passengers, most carrying beach chairs or blankets, for the Skull Pirate ThirdGrade Teacher shirt and by the same token and 10:15 ferry. Over time, trial and error confirmed that the early weekday ferries were the ones to take; once I showed at noon, and the line snaked down the pier nearly a half mile. I turned around and went home.
